Beach Blanket Bingo

As a kick off to our  September "So Long  Summer" We held a Beach Blanket BINGO scavenger hunt  with the staff and residents. I scattered beach themed items around the facility- most things were in plain sight, but a couple were more challenging. I had the entire staff help residents (and the residents helping the staff) find them. The game is ongoing all day - so that 2nd & 3rd shift can play too. Thank You to Christine at Re-Creative Resources for the idea!
* I told the staff yesterday that it was beach day and it would be nice if the residents were dressed tropical. Some of the residents even became part of the game with what they were wearing.  I asked a few residents if they would wear a flower in their hair or on their hat. Because it is summer- some of the staff had tropical scrubs on as well and they also became part of the hunt!
*I wore my "beach skirt" - it has flip-flops, sailboats, bikinis, ice cream, umbrellas etc on it. I also put a flower in my hair.
*I have been hyping up this activity to the residents all week and explained it in detail to them yesterday. Repetition is key- that’s why they play commercials over and over again!
*I reminded staff this morning and told them there were prizes.
*I announced over the loudspeaker what was happening.
*In one living room I put on a CD that had songs like Surf City, Wipeout etc. In the other living room I put the movie Free Willy on- there is a killer whale on the Bingo Card :)  The history channel even had a show with sharks and other creatures and it was on in some of the residents rooms. Wasn't that nice of them to schedule it for me? :)
*Because I am excited, the residents got excited, and most of the staff got excited. There are always a couple party poopers- “I’m too busy working….” just ignore them. I started last year working with our staff to get them involved-  Whenever we have popcorn, smoothies or other treats- I make sure the staff gets a treat too.  I have special contests through out the year to go with the activities. Sometimes I will give out tickets for bringing residents to activities or when I catch them doing something nice. Later this month- I will be hiding flamingos around the facility for the staff to find- each time they find one they get a ticket. We draw for silly prizes- nothing expensive- sometimes its just a free pop- but the staff know that I appreciate them, so they do help me out when they can.  It is amazing what a little bit of appreciation can do!
*I handed out Bingo Cards to everyone- even if they were in their rooms and not “coming” to the activity. As they came out to lunch- they found items on the list- because most were in plain sight- and they got involved. I used “beachy” napkins that had some of the items on the list and put quite a few items in the dining room. I hid duplicates of a few items on either end of the building and if I didn't have the item I just printed a picture from the Publisher clip-art.
*Visitors and family members also got a Bingo card and were invited to play along.
*It was so much fun watching everyone searching for things- residents and staff were searching, laughing, and helping each other. I may have to do a different themed BINGO scavenger hunt in the near future....fall, Christmas, (hmm maybe with the kids) St Patrick's Day....there are a myriad of possibilities!

If anyone wants to use our BINGO cards, I have a pdf of the BINGO card I made - I just haven't figured out how to post it here. Email me and I will send it to you!

NewFOs for April

I am actually going to remember to link up this month- I ALWAYS have a New FO going on, I just never remember to link up!
In April I was rather busy with the Volunteer Party- I made rice hot/cold packs for the volunteers (I used Lori's tutorial over at Bee in My Bonnet) but I can't seem to find a picture :( I just realized the extras are lying on the table so I can take a picture!

I called them Hot Lead/ cold Feet packs to go with the movie theme

I also started some bags

and made a blueberry (AC wanted everything blueberry for his birthday and since my fabric for his gift wasn't here yet I made a blue berry)
Him and Bernard the blueberry are rather silly
I also made a scrap bag and pin cushion- just for me!
I got the Debbie Mumm fabric for my birthday
and started a memory tie quilt for a friend
I have since found a much better fabric for the background
I even have a plan in mind for the tie quilt- and may be able to work on it this weekend. All these projects are finished except the Tie Quilt-I got more done than I thought, I should do this more often.
Have a great day!Oh by the way, I am linking this up with Cat Patches NewFO Party! Cat Patches

Abraham Lincoln's Birthday

Today in honor of Abraham Lincoln's Birthday the Residents and I built a log cabin- We were going to use Lincoln Logs but I couldnt get over to my sister's house to borrow them. So we used pretzel rods instead- our chinking is Peanut butter and our shingles, doors and windows are saltines. We had a lot of fun building our cabin- our engineering needs some tweaking but The cabin *is* standing (albeit a bit crooked.) After the building was finished we enjoyed the leftover "logs and Chinking"
We added a pond with a fisherman
and a stack of firewood

Today is not only Honest Abe's Birthday it is day 2 of the Hugs and Kisses Hop

Check out what these ladies have made!

Ramblings

I realized the other day that I *still* hadn't stitched a stitch all year! I seem to have lost my mojo- It may be buried in my disaster area office- I was informed last week that I had til the first to move my office into one half the size. (I am an activity director at a nursing home- that means lots LOTS of stuff) EEEK!!!  AND being the end of the month I also had to get the new activity calendar done, write the newsletter and make new bulletin boards and... and... and...  I took it as a challenge and managed to get moved a day ahead of schedule and get the calendar up on time. The newsletter is done (not mailed but done) and I made an adorable bulletin board- I feel a bit like wonder woman! Of course my cats are wondering if I still live at home and my poor house...- lets not go there okay? :) My new office is in a better location and has lots of shelves, just not deep shelves. I think I will like it.
The bulletin board was so easy that it really shouldn't rank high in accomplishments but it is so stinkin' cute (IMHO) it looks like it should be way at the top! All I did was take the wrapping paper off the background and add some book page hearts n lace. That's it.

It was so easy I had time to make myself a wee book page heart garland for my  new office. I am going curtain fabric shopping tonight. I am also going to make my filing cabinet pretty with fabric. I will post pictures soon.

I did get some sewing done for the Hugs and Kisses Hop coming soon- my day is the 14th! AND I can't show you what I made but until then I can show you something I made for the same little girl that one of my hugs and kisses projects is for. This was Emma's Christmas gift-I used an old picture frame and made her a hair bow frame. It has will have hooks on the bottom for ponytail holders and headbands. The Letters and little dresses are chipboard from my scrapbooking stash- I LOVE K&Company chipboxes!

I am off to shop! Have a great day!

FRIDAY!!!

It's Friday! Hip Hip Hooray!

Today is also my last day working in Accounts Receivable! I start work as an Activity Director at the local Nursing Home next Wednesday! I will still work at the Dosido on Saturdays, (I really enjoy working there)   but the rest of the week I will be doing what I love! I am blessed to have two jobs that I love! AND I can walk to both of them!
I am not sure when I will have computer access for blogging so if I am missing that will be the reason. I have already been working on the July Activity Calendar and  there are so many fun things to celebrate in July! William Spooner's birthday, Wrong Way Corrigan, Ventriloquist's Week, Day of the Cowboy, Ice Cream day, Independence Day, Hot Dog Day, French Fry Day, and Doghouse Repair Month, just to name a few!  The ideas are swarming in my brain! I will be posting more about these in the days to come.

Since it is my last day, I made cupcakes for everyone here and I experimented with the frosting- one of the guys made my day, he said the frosting was so good he could just eat it without the cupcake. I made the frosting the regular way with cream cheese and real butter and added Blackberry Fusion Jell-o to it.

I am linking up with Confessions of a Fabric Addict, however, I can't show you the entire Finish because its for the Red White and Blue Blog hop (my day is the 13th.) I showed you part of it on Wednesday and here is another peek.

Tonight MySweetMommie and I are working on her new Mystery Project: she keeps guessing and I keep saying "Nope!" I told her that was the only answer she would get out of me! Check back tonight for the reveal of her first mystery project!

Earl Stanley Grey is studying the Bible through osmosis!

Have a great DAY!
